OZtrail Cooking Base - 20cm

A deceptively simple piece of kit. Pros: • Cheap • Lightweight • Strong & Sturdy • Foldable • Allows for fine control over cooking temp • Wok-compatible (see body of review) Cons: • Not ultra-lightweight • Mine was slightly rusty at the hinge Review: So, first impressions: when I opened this up it was a little rusty at the hinge. Just surface rust. I'm not sure whether that's a manufacturing issue or due to it being left on the shelf for years (which would be a shock to me because in my opinion these things should be flying out the door because they are an incredible little thing at a very good price.) But it's not a big deal to me either way. I suspect that to prevent the superficial rust the manufacturing required would increase the cost dramatically, just like if they made these out of titanium instead of steel. Honestly I wouldn't have bought this if it cost $50+ due to precision machining or to using different materials. Also the instructions state that a light amount of oiling will prevent rust and I would recommend that you take that advice seriously for the sake of the longevity of the product. So why is this thing so good? It is strong enough to hold cast iron pots and pans of a large size. If you wanted to use one of those massive cast iron pots then you'd probably need to get the larger size but for all but the most enormous of pots, this one will do nicely. It's small and compact, neatly folding up. The pin holding it all together seems strong. Are you camping without your BBQ cook plate? You're going to want to bring this with you instead. Sick of trying to balance a pan or a pot on some rocks or an unstable fire? Tired arms from trying to hold up a pan so it doesn't get too hot from the flames? You need this. It can be used beside your campfire with a pot to slow cook or gently simmer: just arrange some coals from your fire evenly under the stand. Add more or adjust as needed to achieve the correct temperature. Got a lightweight pan or pot? Do the same thing here. Now your scrambled eggs won't stick and burn to the pan because you'll be able to moderate the heat properly. And as for the wok? I don't think anyone's mentioned this neat trick yet, but if you invert the cooking base it maintains its stability while allowing room for the curved bottom of a wok in the gap between the legs. I've tried this with a large size wok and it works perfectly (it's more stable than my gas stove is for my wok.) I love this thing, I give it my strongest recommendation and I think it's only a matter of time before I buy another one.
